How would you explain your job to someone who doesn’t know VFX?

“Compositor” is a job working in media industry; like films, tv series and music videos. We are the ones who combine all the elements from other teams and make the moving picture complete and realistic. With us and other teams together, we can do anything you ever imagine, from removing a person out of the shot or creating things out in outer space.

What does a day in the life look like?

I’m a lead compositor and currently focus on training Indonesian team. My shift will start with going through all the lists with coordinators to see which projects should be prioritized each day. The rest of the day will be quality checking all shots from my team, checking on my artists to see how they are doing on their shots, helping artists on all issues they may have in compositing, and communicating with producers and coordinators to make sure everyone has the most recent information about shot status.

What are some of your favorite projects? Why?

My most favorite project is ‘Are you there god, It’s me Margaret’. I love this project so much, because this is the first feature film I worked on as a lead compositor. We spent almost a year on this film. There are countless of both visible and invisible VFX works in it. Lots of difficult CG shots and matte painting. This project was beautifully done and I was so proud of it!

What's something you wish people knew about what you do?

There are bunch of invisible VFX we did on lots of projects. Those are the VFX works that purposely been made to complete the look or the vibe of the story, but not to be noticed by the audiences. We’ve been working hard to make those VFX blend in seamlessly. I wish people knew that those regular shots they see might not be as simple as they thought.

What is something that excites you about your career?

As an artist, new VFX technology always brings excitement, especially in the past couple years, many VFX tools have been launched. I was so excited to see how we can use those tools to better our work and even make our pipeline faster and easier.

Are you learning anything new?

I’ve usually learned something new from everyone I work with. No matter they are supervisors, leads or artists. All cool comp techniques I never knew, new in-house tools or even new languages. It is very fun working with amazing people around the world. They are so kind to share their experiences and knowledge so I can keep learning everyday.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy spending time out of work with my family finding some good food and nice place to chill out. We love driving around the city or even out of the city to check out new spots. There are tons of beautiful nature locations in BC where we live. We still have a lot of places in our check list we haven’t been to.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

“Do not rush, be mindful, and you won’t fail yourself” This not only applies when I work, but also applies to every step in my life.
