How would you explain your job to someone who doesn’t know VFX?

My job as a VFX compositor involves helping to bring ideas and imagination to life, allowing people to experience them when they watch their favorite movie or TV show. Imagine creating and assembling incredible things that can’t be filmed, such as fantastical creatures, distant planets, floating cities, and futuristic machines, so audiences can see and enjoy them as if they were real.

As compositing artists, we work closely with other VFX departments such as CG, tracking, DMP, and editorial to integrate CG and live-action elements into each shot, ensuring a coherent and believable story.

What does a day in the life look like?

Most days are busy and come with their unique challenges. You’re usually working with your comp team to meet project goals, discussing and planning with supervisors the best ways to approach each task, while making sure everything stays on schedule. There’s constant communication with other VFX departments, as well as with production and coordination teams, to ensure deadlines are met, required elements are fulfilled, and the latest project updates are shared with the team.

What are some of your favorite projects? Why?

I had the opportunity to work on some incredible shows, such as The Sympathizer, The Night Agent, and Echoes. It was great being part of the process of creating and integrating cool effects such as explosions, CG face replacements, creatures, blood, and fire. Helping achieve those effects and make them believable is always a great experience.

What's something you wish people knew about what you do?

Most of what we watch in theaters or on TV involves a significant amount of VFX. Behind every shot, there’s a huge team of professionals who dedicate countless hours with care and passion to make each frame look seamless.

What is something that excites you about your career?

You get to work on amazing projects, great movies, and shows, while collaborating with incredibly talented and inspiring people. Every project is different, offering new things to learn, new techniques to master, and new challenges that help you grow both as an artist and as a person.

Are you learning anything new?

I started learning sculpting in Blender not long ago. I consider it a fun way to develop new skills. I also began learning ice skating, preparing for the next holiday season.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy walking along the river pier after work with my wife and our dog, Nala. On weekends, we love exploring new parks or hiking trails to enjoy the sun and fresh air. It's the best.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Always stay curious and open to learning. If you ever lose all your material possessions, the wisdom and knowledge you've gained throughout your life can never be taken away from you.
