Ingenuity Studios has shared with VFXWorld and AWN a VFX breakdown reel and before / after images highlighting their work delivering 378 shots across 8 episodes of the recently released Hulu miniseries Washington Black.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, Washington Black follows the 19th-century odyssey of George Washington “Wash” Black, an 11-year-old boy born on a Barbados sugar plantation, whose prodigious scientific mind sets him on a path of unexpected destiny.
Of the 378 shots Ingenuity delivered, 126 shots contained CG elements. The extensive project required 359 TB of storage. The team, who utilized Houdini, Nuke, Maya, Mocha, and Photoshop, consisted of over 130 artists.
“This was such an ambitious project, especially considering the fact that a third of our 378 shots were CG-heavy,” said Tyler Shanklin, VFX Producer, Ingenuity Studios. “Every department at Ingenuity Studios understood the assignment and gave it their all. We expected challenges, and when they arose, we rolled with them and worked out solutions to keep the work on track.
